The Difference between Latching Relay and High Power Relay

Pulished on Aug. 18, 2020

Latching relay and high power relay are the two most popular relays. Today let’s talk about the differences between them.

First of all, what is the biggest difference between these two kinds of relays. Latching relay as its name means that when you give it a pulse it can stay forever. For example, when the factory state of a latching relay is normally open, the customer gives it a pulse after buying it, thus it can remain normally closed. On the contrary, if the factory state is normally closed,a pulse can make it remain normally open. In contrast, the high-power relay requires constant pulse to keep the state of the relay normally open or normally closed, which also means that the latching relay is more efficient compared with the high-power relay.

Different Application:

From the above differences, it can be seen that that latching relay and high power are used in different condition. For example, high-power application  include charging pile cars, stabilizer,UPS and motors, etc. The application of latching relay is often in the field of new energy and energy monitoring, such as voltage monitors, solar panels, electricity meters and so on.

Next, let's look at the difference between the two kinds relays from some specific parameters.

1.dimension: latching relays’ smaller and more compact than high power relay. We can see it more intuitively from below pic.

2.Contact state: The contact state of high-power relay is generally 1A/1B/1C, 2A/2B or 3A/3B/3C, while latching relay 1A/1B or 2A/2B or 3A/3B. A refers to normally open,B refers to normally closed,C refers to Transfer, 1 means one phase, 2 refers to two phase and 3 refers to three phase.

3.Coil voltage: Comparing the latching relay, relay coil voltage range of high power relay is higher. For example, 6~220VDC 6~240VDC, but the most common ones are 12VDC and 24VDC, while the most common power of latching relay is 9VDC and 12VDC.
